3 Production Systems
he interest in production systems on the part of those building high performance knowledge-based systems is more than a coincidence. It is suggested that this is a result of current research (re)discovering what has been learned by naturally intelligent systems through evolutionthat structuring knowledge in a production system format is an effective approach to the organisation, retrieval and use of very large amounts of knowledge. The success of some production rule-based AI systems does give weight to this argument, and the production system methodology is clearly powerful. But whether this is a result of its equivalence to human cognitive processes, and whether this implies artificially intelligent systems ought to be similarly structured, are, we feel, still open questions. 4 production control
Opsthe control of all aspects of production, according to a predetermined production plan. Production planning and production control are closely linked, and sometimes the terms are used interchangeably. Nevertheless, they differ in focus: production planning focuses on the scheduling of the production process; production control focuses on the application of the plan which results from the production planning. Computerized techniques, such as material requirements planning and optimized production technology combine elements of planning and control. -

16 lean production
Opsa methodology aimed at reducing waste in the form of overproduction, excessive lead time, or product defects in order to make a business more effective and more competitive. Lean production originates in the production systems established by Toyota in Japan in the 1950s.In the early 1980s there was a significant increase in the application of lean production in Western companies. Lean production is characterized by lean operations with low inventories, quality management through prevention of errors, small batch runs, just-in-time production, high commitment human resource policies, team-based working, and close relations with suppliers. The term was popularized by researchers on the International Motor Vehicle Program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in their book The Machine That Changed the World. Concepts that can help an organization move toward lean production include continuous improvement and world class manufacturing. -
17 master production scheduling
Opsa technique used in material requirements planning systems to develop a detailed plan for product manufacturing. The master production schedule, compiled by a master scheduler, takes account of the requirements of various departments, including sales (delivery dates), finance (inventory minimization), and manufacturing (minimization of setup times), and it schedules production and the purchasing of materials within the capacity of and resources available to the production system. The ultimate business dictionary > master production scheduling

20 flow production
Opsa production method in which successive operations are carried out on a product in such a way that it moves through the factory in a single direction. Flow production is most widely used in mass production on production lines. More recently, it has been linked with batch production. Under flow production, inventory is often kept to the minimum necessary to ensure continued activity. Stoppages and interruptions to the flow indicate a fault, and corrective action can be taken. Assembly line production is an extreme version of flow production.
